sandwich take II

Don't Fret Jill, we were just taking a break, well, not really a break, more like we were adding to the food.
For lunch today I had one of my usual sandwiches - sun dried tomato turkey, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, grey poupon on whole wheat. And some doritos on the side. (which is what this picture is.)

However, I didn't get a picture of this but I thought I would share. After the Dodger game I went to tonight, a bunch of us (my professor included) stopped at Tommy Burger. We drove all over looking for it too. This was my first time EVER having one. I had a cheeseburger all the way (chili included). Oh boy it was good, messy, greasy, and inhaled in about 3 minutes. Let me just say 6 people in a car with all of us having just had Tommy Burger, not a good idea. Plus I was crammed in the "third row" bouncing up and down. I wish I had taken a picture of it though, it was a one of a kind.

Sandwich

I'm not usually a sandwich person but I really wanted to use up what we had in the fridge. I actually really liked this sandwich concoction...made with lightly-toasted whole grain bread, fried egg (using non-fat cooking spray), proscuitto, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil leaves. Sure beats Rocketdog's Subway kick! --MM

gelsons to the rescue

At my work there is NOTHING to eat around there. It's in a residential area that takes practically 10 minutes just to get out of. Well, I've been frequenting Subway more than I would like simply because there really isn't much else as an option. Well, today I decided to spice things up and I headed over to Gelson's the local supermarket where I purchased some sushi from the ready-to-go section. I got spicy tuna rolls with brown rice. Yup.. this posh neighorhood has Gelson's as the local market and they sell sushi with BROWN rice. Well, it was good, relatively cheap, and healthy. Subway, who?

Chicken Curry

Not the prettiest of pictures but it sure tasted yummy. Again, I made dinner with the idea that I had to use up what we had in the fridge. Chicken curry with potatoes, carrots, mushrooms and corn atop brown rice. I learned from Pigpen to add seasoned vinegar to the mix which gives it an extra kick. --MM

CORN DOG!

I had a small lunch today because I was busy and not very hungry. So I cooked up a frozen tofu corn dog. Yup..good ol TJ's was selling them. It wasn't bad, but I heard that they have big ones at disneyland! Can't wait!

eatsa pizza

For dinner I had pizza today. Mr Clean and Mr Clean's brother wanted to go to the bar to watch the pistons game. Well, roomie and I were already in our fat pants and ready to pass out. If it wasn't for the red sox/yanks game (GO SOX!!) i woulda been napping. Anyways, since we didn't go out they decided to order pizza from Papa John's. Oh and we had chicken tenders. They're good but tiny. Now I feel so sick and queesy. =P

What The Duck??

In honor of my favorite tee, "What the duck"...roast duck with mushroom risotto and sauteed baby spinach. I think it would have made a much better picture if I had only cut the duck in half - there's too much duck on the plate! --MM

trivia

Tonight Roomie and mr clean and I went to the neighborhood pub for dinner. More important we went there for trivia night. Going in as team Michigan we were losing the entire game. Well, we were a pathetic last and being competitive my hopes were down. However, the last question you could get up to 20 points, based on what you bid, or lose those points. Well, the last question was "what color or category star is considered to have the highest temperature?" (you have to guess the answer). And we got it right and we bid 20 points cause we didn't have anything to lose, and we ended up going from 6th to 3rd in the end, winning Team Michigan $10!! That's going into our trivial pool. Anyways, while I was there I had fish and chips.

Papparadelle with Smashed Peas

I found a recipe for papparadelle with smashed pea. It looked so good in my "Real Simple" magazine but it didn't taste as good as I thought it would. Mr. Moc said "why did you have to smash up the peas?". I wonder if it would have tasted better if I used regular ricotta cheese instead of the fat-free version? --MM

this one is for jill...

Tonight my roommate made filipino spaghetti for dinner. It's pretty similar to your average American spaghetti, except it's sweet. It was tasty. There was mushroom, onion, garlic, meat and sauce. She said usually filipinos put hot dogs in it. hee hee. I also (helped taught Sai) made a caprese appetizer, you know tomato, mozzarella, basil.

Flying Fig

Last night, we went out to Flying Fig for Shaggy's birthday dinner. Mr. Moc and I had been to Flying Fig before and enjoyed it but it wasn't the same last night. Portions were tiny and the flavor just wasn't there. It's a shame but it seems as if a lot of the restaurants in Cleveland aren't consistent. In any case, I had the wild striped seabass with fingerling potatoes and a light cream sauce for dinner. Sorry, most of my pictures from last night turned out worse than this one! --MM

snickerdoodles

Last night I got a bit antsy from not doing anything (I decided not to work on my paper) so instead I decided to make cookies at 10:15pm. Strange thing was I had all the ingredients I needed, scary. Anyways, this is the Mrs Field's recipe. I usually make a recipe that requires cream of tartar. The Mrs Field's recipe is more cakey, the other recipe i usually use it more chewy. I think I like the non Mrs Fields better!

Roti

Much to my delight, a local japanese restaurant has added malaysian dishes to their menu. Apparently, this is the only restaurant in all of Ohio that serves Malaysian food. We finally tried it last night - it was pretty good. I've had Malaysian food in Malaysia, Singapore and Los Angeles and I'll have to say, this tastes pretty authentic!

This roti with curried chicken sauce was our appetizer. The curry sauce had a nice spicy kick to it. Yummy! --MM

goat cheese at work

For dinner today I made chicken stuffed with goat cheese, basil, and green onion. Actually, I didn't have enough goat cheese so I added some feta. I accompanied it with spinach with lemon and cous cous with roasted red bell pepper, kalamata olives and feta cheese. I had some leftover chocolate and some strawberries so I made chocolate covered strawberries. (The picture looks horrible)

Leftovers

I made a simple dinner last night with the leftovers from the roast chicken with linguine and brocoli rabe. The sauce was made from lemon juice & zest, chicken broth, pine nuts, parmesan cheese and a bit of proscuito. Even though no cream was added, the pasta had a creamy, comforting taste to it. --MM

Thai delivery

Tonight I pampered myself and had Thai food delivered to my house...even tho the Thai place is 2 blocks away. (I finished one of my classes today so i rewarded myself, plus i was tired and it was raining.. hee hee.) So I ended up waiting for them for 1 1/2 hours!! GRRRRRR...plus they didn't give me rice!

Anyways, I had pad thai and chicken tom ka. The pad thai was mmmm...okay. The tom ka, which is this spicy coconut milk soup. Here is a picture of the pad thai.

Dessert

So last night, Mr. Moc and I were really wanted to get some dessert...actually I was dying for some dessert but there was nowhere to go! We had to drive pretty far to get to the Cheesecake Factory since nothing else was open after 8PM! Mr. Moc got his usual dessert in the form of a cheesecake...tiramisu cheesecake and I got the chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake.

From now on, I'll be posting in the morning instead of after dinner. So I'm saving the picture from tonight's dinner for tomorrrow morning's post. In the meantime, you'll have to look at this ugly picture from last night. --MM

Farmer's Market

Today I took a lot of pictures but I won't post all them. I will post the other ones for days I forget to take pictures. But I am posting pictures of what I had for dinner -- tamales and tquitos from the CC farmer's market. I got one chicken and chile tamale, one goat cheese, tomato, and basil tamale, and chicken taquitos. The chicken and chile tamale tastes just like the ones I get at Trader Joe's, so I think it might be the same company. The goat cheese one was good, it tasted like the bruschetta and goat cheese dip I make. The roomies actually have never had tamales before so I made them try some. And the chicken taquitos were ok, there were no alberto's thats for sure. I also got a tomato and goat cheese at the farmer's market.

Bawk Bawk

This was my first attempt at roasting a chicken. I don't know why I was so intimidated by roasting a chicken since I've roasted at least one turkey a year for the past 11 years or so! Roasting a chicken is so much easier than roasting a turkey! The chicken turned out pretty good - moist and fork tender - the meat just fell off the bone. No knife needed. Along with the roast chicken and vegetables, I made a quick salad of french green beans, tomatoes, sliced boccacini and a light vinaigrette. --MM

lox of lox

Today for lunch I had a lox and cream cheese bagel from Noah's. I only ate 1/2 of it so I had the other half for dinner. I also had some leftover pasta for dinner tonight with shell pasta instead of whole wheat penne.
--RD

Picadillo

Normally, I make picadillo with ground beef but I didn't have any ground beef today. I used ground turkey...in addition, the recipe calls for a green bell pepper and beef broth. I had neither so I substituted with chopped up green beans and chicken broth. The picadillo was still good but it was a lighter version of the original version. --MM

turkey spag

Tonight i defrosted some spaghetti sauce I made a while ago and had it for dinner. It's basically an imitation of Moc Moc's famous spaghetti sauce. I made it so long ago I don't remember what was in it -- ground turkey, carrots, onions, zuchinni, and olives. But I served it over whole wheat penne which you can't see in this picture. And of course I had a can of sparking water with lime =)--RD

Comfort Food

What's your comfort food? Mine is italian food - pastas and risotto. I usually make a plain and simple risotto but I tried a new recipe tonight and Mr. Moc and I loved it. I think this will be my "new" risotto - wild mushroom risotto with peas. --MM

All You Can Eat

So have you ever had all you can eat dim sum? Well Mr. Moc and I had it for the first time today with Social Butterfly. We checked out this place in "asia-town" called Tom's Seafood Restaurant - I've passed it before but never thought to go in. Well for $8/person, you can eat all you want. It's just like eating dim sum in any other chinese restaurant...you point to what you like when the chinese ladies push the carts past your table. However instead of stamping your "bill", the ladies give you whatever you want and move on tho the next table. Basically, for the flat rate of $8, you have all you can eat dim sum. The food wasn't bad but I think I prefer to eat "normal" dim sum because there's more selection and better quality for almost the same amount of money. --MM

uncle bill's pancake house

So this morning, or should I say afternoon I went down to Manhattan Beach and went to Uncle Bill's Pancake House. Mocmoc took me there last time she was in town so I wanted to spread the word and took my roomies and cousin Karne there. This is a picture of what I had..potatoes reigo.. which contatins potates, bacon, green peppers, onions, cheese and avocadoes, topped with sour cream (and i added tobasco, be proud! mocmoc). We also had a side of sausage links. Anyways, it was a great meal and I felt so queesy from the grease, but it was good. Too bad the weather wasn't that great. But afterwards we stopped by this cute little store called Udderly (something, can't remember the second word) and I bougtht a $5 make up bag with hawaiin designs on it. Since I don't need a make-up bag I'm using it as a clutch! =) I *heart* manhattan beach!

Guadalajara Special and Strawberry Soda

While running errands, we saw a Mexican restaurant and decided to give it a try. Considering where we live, it wasn't too bad - still not like the Mexican food we get in California - but tolerable every once in a while.

my lack of a picture

So i forgot to take a picture of what I ate today. I guess I was just so hungry I forgot. So, i'll just tell you what I had. For breakfast I had a bowl of stale kashi cereal. Then I had coffee. And for lunch we went out to celebrate a coworkers birthday so we went and had mexican food. I had a chicken and spinach enchillada with green sauce, rice and beans. In addition we also had chips and salsa and guacamole. Then later on in the day I stopped by Starbucks, on my way to school, and had a toffee nut latte. Yah I had two cups of coffee today. For a snack I had some cool ranch flavored doritos and a milano cookie (courtesy of my groupmate). When I came home I made myself a "breakfast burrito". Really it was just like scrambled eggs, spinach, cheese wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla with salsa. And then while I was eating it, I realized this was pretty much the same thing I had for lunch minus the rice and beans and instead of chicken I had its offspring -- egg.

Hopefully tomorrow I will remember!

Lobster Special

My cousin from the "909" came to visit tonight since he was in OH for a business trip. Mr. Moc and I took him to Little Italy since there isn't anything similar in LA. We ate at one of our favorite little Italian restaurants called Valerio's. The lobster with spaghetti was just one of their many dinner specials tonight. It was so yummy the last time I ate it that I just had to order it again tonight...Mr. Moc ordered it too! 909 ordered the penne with bolognese but I didn't get a picture of it. --MM

my snack

So today for a snack I had some Lay's potato chips... Wavy Ranch Lays to be specific. As you can see I'm running low, I need some more. I'm hungry......

Pasta!

Just wanted something easy to make for dinner so I grabbed whatever we had in the fridge and made some pasta. This turned out to be pretty tasty. Whole wheat spaghetti with eggplant, olives, tomatoes, mushrooms and apple chicken sausage seasoned with garlic, salt, fresh ground pepper, hot chili flakes, basil, and parsley and a sprinkling of reggiano parmigiano. --MM

Purple Cauliflower

I went to the farmer's market in Solon last weekend and saw this purple cauliflower. Even though I don't like cauliflower (of any color), I still brought it home...couldn't resist the pretty color. I found a recipe online for a cauliflower gratin - figured it wouldn't make a difference if the cauliflower wasn't a traditional white color. We had the purple cauliflower gratin with some steak for dinner last night. I still can't say that I really like cauliflower though. --MM

greek salad

This is what I had for lunch today. A homemade greek salad with lettuce, grilled chicken, tomatoes, beets, olives, goat cheese and shredded cheese (i ran out of feta, what i usually use) and greek dressing. It's a salad I was introduced to in Michigan (with the beets) --RD

New Purpose

Based on RocketDOG's last post about the book called "Everything I Ate", we're going to change the purpose of our blog. Starting tomorrow, we're posting pictures of what we eat everyday...even if the picture looks bad. Let us know what you think! --MM

everything i ate

There is this book out called Everything I ate: A year in the life of my mouth. This guy took a picture of everything he ate...for a year. And he made a book of it! There's pictures of what he ate when he had a flu - chicken soup, chicken soup, chicken soup and pictures of when he went to Italy. Well, i think moc moc and I need to do that since we do it anyway, pretty much. Anyways, check it out.

Did you know that trail mix was made by surfers?

(Can you tell I'm watching the FOod Network?)

Now they are showing this show on the secret life of cereal. The sad part is, I think Pigpen and I watched this together last summer.

STOP! Red Light!

There have been several times when Mr. Moc misses a red light or a stop light and looks like he's going to plow through the intersection. I'll start screaming, "STOP! Red light, red light! STOP!". So far, we've been lucky and Mr. Moc has been able to screech to a stop just in time.

Well, imagine my reaction while out clubbing in Sao Paulo (Brazil) when my Brazilian friend plows straight through a red light. "STOP! STOP! RED LIGHT, RED LIGHT!". Not only did he speed through the intersection but he also laughed at me! Apparently, in Sao Paulo (and possibly other Brazilian cities), it's common to NOT stop at red lights or else you'd just be asking for a car-jacking. Even the police will pardon the offense to protect the citizens from car-jackings and robbery. Upon learning this tidbit of information, at every intersection, I kept my eyes open and peeled for potential attackers! --MM

television update

Since I have been in China the past two weeks I fell behind in my shows. So, today I did some catching up. I am caught up on Amazing Race and Related. I still have ER, Grey's Anatomy, Lost and Desperate housewives left. Whew. But anyways, I wanna talk about Amazing Race.

The old couple, kinda grate my nerves. They give up so easily yet always end up still in the race. Not fair, because some people are positive until the end and get kicked out! Anyways, I like the hippie guys they are hilarious. The pink girls are annoying with their matching outfits and talk about boobs. Makes me vomit. I really don't like the married couple from the south. That guy is such a dick! He is rude and pompous. Like the time he told the old couple they would help them with their motorcycle and all he said was "that goes there. see you. bye". And then another time he told another couple that they had to help him because he helped them with something small. You can't demand people to help you! And he's so rude to his wife!

Anyways, in Related, Bob had the opportunity to become the sound engineer on JAck Johnson's tour! OOOOOH!!!! My ears perked up when I heard that!

MM is coming to LA on Wednesday...let the eating tour begin!

Samba!

My client and his friends took me to a local Brazilian samba club where they proceeded to "feed" me caipirinhas and teach me to dance the samba. I had no problems with the caipirinhas but struggled with the samba. As many of you know, I have NO rhythm...unlike rocketDOG who has more than enough for both of us!

One thing I did learn is that Brazilians love their samba. As the live band warmed up, the club-goers warmed up too. Chairs were folded up and tables pushed aside so that there was more room to dance. Unlike the clubs I've gone to in the U.S., everyone in the club got up and danced. There were no wallflowers in this place. I think that was the most amazing thing about this samba club...everyone got up and danced. My impression is that the Brazilians are really proud of their samba. I wish we had some of that pride here in the U.S. --MM

Stuck in an elevator

Hey! Ever get stuck in an elevator? Maybe the electricity went out or maybe you needed a special keycard to acess certain floors? Well, I bet you've never been stuck in an elevator that had no buttons! Okay, not exactly no buttons but there were no NUMBER buttons. There were actually a total of 3 buttons in the elevator: 1 to open the doors, 1 to close the doors and 1 to sound the alarm. Little did I know that there is a keypad to program the floor number you want to go to BEFORE you step into the elevator. I stepped into one of a half dozen elevators and was wondering why the group of people standing in the lobby were just standing there! Of course, the two people who were already on the elevator didn't say anything to me...maybe because they could tell just by looking at me that I didn't speak Portuguese! LOL --MM

cookies?!

This week, I'm in Brazil and Ecuador while rocketDOG is in China so don't expect much from us in terms of blogging...not like I've been keeping up with it anyway. I have some free time before I head out to dinner.

I just wanted to blog about my wonderful plane tride from Cleveland to Houston. I was wedged into the window seat. I really don't like window seats unless it's a red eye flight where I'll sleep through the whole ride. Fear of takeoffs and my bum knee (which needs stretching throughout a plane ride or extended sitting - like a movie) keeps me from sitting in the window seat but sometimes it just can't be helped. At least the 2 guys (sitting in the middle and the aisle) were quiet and not spilling out of their seats. Both of them pretty much slept through the entire flight until close to the end. However the guy sitting directly next to me had gold teeth. Hmmmm....

Well, as were approaching our destination and doing our final descent, the kid across the aisle tossed his cookies - yup, he puked and he puked A LOT! All over his own lap and his mom's arms & hands and her carry on bag which was on the floor. Of course I felt bad for the horrified mom and the sick kid and his younger brother who was whining about the smell. On the other hand, I felt sorry for all of us who were sitting near by. We were all struggling to keep it together until we could get off the plane!

So the guy with the gold teeth woke up and started talking to me. Turns out he just moved to Cleveland recently too but he does a lot of traveling especially during the season...which led me to ask him which season? He doesn't actually play any sports but he's the manager of one of the quarterbacks for the Cleveland Browns. Interesting, huh? He was actually a nice guy but I had mistakenly judged a book by its cover when I first got on the plane. That's something I need to learn NOT to do. --MM

$3 a day!

This was one of the best meals I had on my trip to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and the whole meal cost less than $3! Beans & rice, tender chicken and potato salad...don't ask me why I didn't take the plastic wrap off the potato salad before taking this picture.

Anyway, I bought this meal from a local restaurant/deli that was located a couple of blocks from my hotel. There's a sit-down section and then there are these 2 other sections in the restaurant...there's a room for all the baked goods/pastries and another section with glass cases of food. The best part is that I could walk in and point to whatever I wanted to eat and just speak a minimal amount of spanish. Now I hope I can places like this in Brazil and Ecuador. Yup, I'm off on another trip. --MM

I've been away...

Well, it has been a while since I blogged! I feel as if I have nothing interesting to say but out of respect for RocketDog, I will try.

Recently, I've been traveling a lot for work. In fact, I was gone for most of February so being home 2 weeks in a row has become an unknown luxury for me. Although I think it does make me that much more efficient...I want to get stuff done. For example, it just took Mr. Moc and I a few hours to get our papers/receipts/documents ready for our meeting with the accountant. Last year, it took us many more hours/days to get ready for tax season!

This weekend, after our meeting with the accountant, I'm going to try and tackle another big project. I still need to put the finishing touches (hemming) on the draperies that my mom made for our living room. I've been putting that off forever...well, feels like forever...actually since mid-January. The curtain rod has been hanging since end of January. I bet our neighbors can't wait until we hang the drapes. I think the light from our living room shines into their bedroom late at night. Sorry neighbors!

Anyway, this picture is from the streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico...I was there about 2 weeks ago. Most of the buildings were colorful like the ones in this picture. Feels so tropical, doesn't it? --MM

recycled tv

Does this TV look familiar to you? If it does, it doesn't surprise me.

Well, its funny because one day I walked into my friend Phung Sr's house and I went "OH MY GOSH! That TV used to be ours!" And she said "REALLY? I was wondering where it came from!"

This lovely Toshiba used to be our family TV which we purchase probably around 1988-89. Since then it has been in the hands of my sister MocMoc, my brother pigpen, our friend phungus jr and the our other friend Phung Sr. When pigpen moved out of california he must have left it with phungus jr. Well, Phung Sr was at her home one day and said... "i need a tv, i'll take this one that's sitting in the garage". Lo and behold its our lovely tv. Notice the hole on the top of the TV. That's how I know it is ours. mocmoc burnt the hole with a candle.

The funny thing is there is another TV that is floating around amongst our family. It too has a hole on the top from a candle. It's originally cousin squeaky's but it was with our family, buh buh's kids, squeaky's other cousins and flerd as well.

I'm sensing a pattern.....but none of these TVS were ever in my hands =(

Mocmoc's Celebrity Stand-in

So there is this website that can match your photo to which celebrity you look like.

Here is a list of people they gave me starting with the highest match:
1. Lucy Liu - just cause she's chinese too?
2. Alyson Hannigan - well, she matched RD too and RD and I look alike but do we look like Alyson Hannigan?
3. Reika Hashimoto - Japanese actress...
4. Sandra Bullock - um?
5. Mira Sorvino - um?
6. Bipasha Basu - Indian actress...
7. Ayumi Hamasaki - another Japanese actress...
8. Yoko Ono - omg
9. Jennifer Lopez - omg
10. Christina Ricci - ewwww!

Different pictures resulted in different celebrity matches...some of the other celebrities that frequently match me are: Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz...I think it has to do with the way I stretch my lips in certain smiles. After all, I'm known to have a big mouth.

celebrity stand in

So there is this website that can match your photo to which celebrity you look like.

Here is a list of people they gave me starting with the highest match:
1. Sofia Coppola
2. Penelope Cruz
3. Lucy Liu
4. Katie Holmes
5. Alyson Hannigan
6. Emma Watson (don't even know who she is)
7. Simone De Beauvoir (really old lady, dunno who she is)
8. Yenudi Levi (a guy)
9. Jeanne Moreau (dunno who she is either)
10. Tori Amos

I did it a couple times and the top three came up at least 3 times. Tori Amos and Alyson Hannigan came up twice. Funny!
